Make A Difference. Become A Read Aloud Volunteer!
Volunteers are always needed for our Volunteer Reading Program.
Volunteers read aloud 5 to 15 minutes one-on-one with a child to build literacy skills. Reading one-on-one to preschool children is a simple strategy with proven results. More reading in preschool means more success in life.
Our volunteers read to children in more than 100 childcare, Head Start, and kindergarten centers throughout Delaware. In 2019, 600 volunteers read to 6,000 children over 76,000 times.
All volunteers who are 18 years of age or older must undergo a fingerprinted criminal background check. If you have not lived in Delaware for the past five years or do not permanently reside in Delaware, you will be required to obtain additional background checks. Some states charge for these reports; you will be responsible for these fees. Please contact the Read Aloud office in your county for more information.
In addition, volunteers are needed for parent empowerment sessions, office duties, special events, and other projects throughout the year. Student volunteers must be 16 years old to read.
